You're fit! Let's extend the season

As a continuation of the last newsletter, I have some advice to help you finish off the summer. Your last event maybe over but now is NOT the time to put the bike and shoes away!

You're fit right now. Even if you recently had a few weekends of Corona's and BBQ.  Remember your fitness back in February?  You are better and still on a roll!  Below is a plan to extend your health and hold onto your base.

Plan a trip...with your gear

You don't need to sign up for another race.  The idea is to extend your aerobic base training for another month before the evenings start to get dark.  The indoor bike trainer and treadmill can wait another month.  If one more event or race keeps you active, then sign up as entries fees are good motivation and usually cheaper than a concert ticket!

Extend your Base

Hiking for 3 hours or heading out for a 60-80km group ride does wonders for aerobic metabolism.  Hold onto your fat burning and keep those enzymes burning.  These steady state workouts are easier outdoors than in the basement.  By extending your activity level a month longer, the transition to the indoor season will be smooth!

Stay on the Wagon

You don't have to fall off the wagon in order to start fall training.   For the last 20 years, it's always shocking how inactive people are in September and especially October.  It takes us two months just to rebuild their fitness and then we're into the Christmas season.  If you can hold onto your base another month, you will see benefits this winter with a stronger exit next spring.

If we can maintain some aerobic fitness, those fall intervals will not feel so bad.  Your threshold will not drop 10-20% and you don't need to feel so rough when you dust off your gear.

4 point to plan to Extend your Glide

  1. Plan some rides/runs/hikes every second weekend until the end of September
  2. Invite some friends as peer pressure is awesome
  3. Aerobic training (Zone 1-2) is the goal.
  4. Choose some fun routes and enjoy the activity
